Browser push notifications are not showing on Windows

Check Windows and browser settings when Horizon says a test was sent but nothing appears on your PC.

New Horizon Experience. This article describes the New Horizon Experience. In the Horizon WebRef mobile apps for Android and iOS, New Horizon is already what you see. On a computer or laptop, choose Try the New Horizon Experience from the banner or your account menu. You can switch back from that menu any time.

Use this guide when you enrolled a browser for push notifications (or you expect alerts on this Windows PC) and the alert never appears, even after Send test seems to succeed. Horizon may have delivered the message to your browser's push service while Windows or the browser still blocks what you see on screen. That is a PC setting issue, not a broken enrollment by itself.

This article is for signed-in members using a computer browser on Windows. For enrolling devices and managing the list, see Managing Push Notifications. Phone and tablet app alerts are covered there as well. Assignment text messages are separate; see How to opt-in or out of text message notifications.

Confirm Horizon sent the test

Sign in on the same Windows PC and browser where you expect the alert. Open Personal Profile, then choose Notifications.

Notifications on Personal Profile on a phone. Assignment text messages appear at the top of this page. Push notification devices are further down on the same Notifications page.

On a computer, the same Notifications page uses the wider layout.

Scroll to Push notification devices. Find the browser row for this PC. When Horizon can tell that this is the browser you are using, that row may show a This device badge. Choose Send test on that row.

If Horizon reports that the test was sent and Last notification updates, Horizon has done its part. Keep reading to check Windows and browser settings. If Send test fails with an error, disconnect that browser device, enroll this browser again (allow notifications when asked), then try Send test once more. Enrollment steps are in Managing Push Notifications.

Use the same browser that enrolled

Browser push is tied to that browser profile on that PC. Chrome and Microsoft Edge are separate. A second Chrome profile is also separate. Open Horizon in the same browser (and profile) you used when you chose Enroll this browser. If This device never appears on any browser row while you are looking at the list, you are probably in a different browser or profile than the one that enrolled.

Allow the site in your browser

Horizon needs permission to show notifications in that browser.

In Google Chrome, open a new tab and go to chrome://settings/content/notifications (paste that address into the address bar). Make sure notifications are not blocked overall. Under allowed sites, confirm Horizon WebRef is listed as allowed, not blocked. If you see a quieter or less intrusive option for the site, turn that off while you test so alerts can appear normally.

In Microsoft Edge, open edge://settings/content/notifications and make the same checks: notifications allowed for the site, and not forced into a quieter mode while you are testing.

You can also click the lock or tune icon in the address bar on a Horizon page, open site permissions or site settings, and set Notifications to Allow.

Allow notifications in Windows

Even when the browser is allowed, Windows can hide the popup.

Open Windows Settings (you can press the Windows key, type Notifications, and open Notifications settings). Turn Notifications on for the PC. In the list of apps, find Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge (whichever you use for Horizon) and make sure that app is allowed to send notifications.

Check Focus assist, Do not disturb, or Focus modes. If one of those is on for priority only, or set to quiet hours, turn it off briefly, or allow your browser through that mode, then send the test again.

Look where Windows keeps alerts

Some PCs show a corner popup. Others only drop the alert into Notification Center (Action Center). Press Windows logo key + N (or open Notification Center from the taskbar) and look for the Horizon or browser notification there. Also check whether a full-screen app, presentation mode, or game is running. Those can suppress popups while the alert still lands in Notification Center.

Work or school PCs

On a company or school computer, IT policy can block browser or Windows notifications even when your own settings look correct. Security software, device management, or quiet-hours tools can do the same. If everything above looks right and tests still never appear, ask your IT team whether notifications for Chrome or Edge are restricted on that PC. You can still use the Horizon WebRef mobile app for push alerts on your phone while the PC is blocked.

Quick checklist

Work through these in order: same browser and profile as enrollment; site notifications allowed in Chrome or Edge; Windows notifications on for that browser; Focus assist or Do not disturb off for the test; check Notification Center after Send test; ask IT if this is a managed PC.

If you still see the older legacy desktop or laptop layout

On the older all-in-one profile, push devices still appear under your notification settings, but the page is not split into Notifications tiles. Find the push devices list on that older screen, use Send test if it is offered, then use the same Windows and browser checks above. The Notifications tile and This device badge belong to the New Horizon Experience.
