Security check failed. Please reload and try again

What that message means, and how privacy-focused browsers can cause it.

This article is about the message Security check failed. Please reload and try again (and close wording such as Security check failed. Please reload the page and try again). Horizon can show it while you sign in, reset a password, or confirm a temporary username after a password reset. It can appear on a phone or on a computer.

Anyone using Horizon WebRef in a web browser can see this message. Organization administrators cannot turn it on or off, and there is nothing to set up. Horizon shows it when a security check for that step cannot finish on your current browser session.

Use this article when you see those words, when you still have a screenshot of them, or when you are asking about a security check that asked you to reload. If the message you see is We suspect you're a robot, that is a different check — use the Help Center article about that message instead.

What you are seeing

Horizon asks for a short confirmation (for example Current Username after a password reset) and then shows a red security-check message instead of continuing. The wording tells you to reload and try again. On a computer, the same message appears in that same confirmation step.

This is not the same as typing the wrong username or password. Wrong credentials get a different message. This one means the browser session could not complete Horizon's security check for that request.

What to do next

Start with a full reload of the page, then try the step again. If the message returns right away, switch to a mainstream browser Horizon supports well — Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Apple Safari — and open Horizon there. Sign in or continue the password reset in that browser.

Privacy-focused browsers and aggressive privacy modes often block or isolate cookies that Horizon needs to keep your session safe. DuckDuckGo Browser is a common example. Brave, Firefox Strict / Enhanced Tracking Protection at its highest setting, and similar privacy tools can cause the same security-check message even when your username and password are correct.

Also turn off ad blockers or content blockers for Horizon for this visit, or try a private window in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari after you have allowed cookies for the site. If you were on public Wi‑Fi or a VPN, try your normal network. The Horizon WebRef mobile apps for Android and iOS are another reliable path when a privacy browser on the phone keeps failing the check.

Common questions

Is my username or password wrong?

Not necessarily. When the credentials are wrong, Horizon usually says so in wording about the username or password. Security check failed. Please reload and try again points at the browser session, not at a misspelled password.

Is this the same as “We suspect you're a robot”?

No. That robot message is a different protection step. This article is only for the security-check / reload wording. If you see the robot wording, follow the Help Center article for that message.

Why do privacy browsers cause this?

Horizon uses cookies and related browser checks so each step of signing in or resetting a password stays tied to your visit. Privacy browsers are built to limit that kind of storage. When those checks cannot complete, Horizon stops and asks you to reload. Switching to Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari usually clears it.

Do I need to wait until tomorrow for a password reset?

Only if Horizon already told you a password reset was used for the day. The security-check message by itself does not mean you must wait until tomorrow. Fix the browser or app path first, then continue. If a daily reset limit still applies after that, Horizon will say so in its own wording.

Can my organization turn this off?

No. This is not a System Settings switch. Organization administrators cannot disable the security check. Use a supported browser or the Horizon mobile app, reload, and try again.

I still see it after switching browsers

Confirm cookies are allowed for Horizon, disable blockers for the site, and try once more after a full reload. If it continues, contact Horizon support and include a screenshot of the exact message, the browser name (for example DuckDuckGo), and whether you were signing in or resetting a password.
